There was both joy and disappointment for the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Team at the MXGP of Flanders. Joy followed Calvin Vlaanderen’s impressive third-place finish in the deep sands of Lommel, while sadness came after Jago Geerts’ heavy crash in the first moto. Maxime Renaux – just back after his injury and with limited bike training – finished twelfth.

Geerts had eagerly looked forward to his home GP in Lommel, where he had previously claimed three MX2 victories. His qualifying race on Saturday (P6) was promising, and things started well Sunday too. Jago got a good start in the first race, settled into sixth and began chasing fellow Belgian Brent Van Doninck. But one of his attacks ended badly on a jump. Jago landed hard and was forced to retire. The Belgian was dealing with significant pain in his shoulder and knee, which sidelined him for the second moto. Further medical examinations will determine the full extent of his injuries.
